FETAL DEATHS AND INFANT DEATHS
?
The number of resident fetal deaths (stillbirths occurring at 20 or more weeks
of gestation) increased by 3 from 1,530 in 2012 to 1,533 in 2013. The rate was
unchanged at 7.1 per 1,000 live births from 2012 to 2013.
?
Between 2012 and 2013, resident fetal deaths increased among whites from
822 to 869, decreased among blacks from 626 to 579, and increased by 4 for
other races from 77 to 81.
?
Of all resident fetal deaths in 2013, 68.5 percent were to mothers of non-
Hispanic and non-Haitian origin, 21.4 percent were to mothers of Hispanic
origin, 6.5 percent were to mothers of Haitian origin and 3.6 percent were to
mothers whose ethnicity was unknown.
?
Between 2012 and 2013, the neonatal death rate increased slightly from 3.9 per
1,000 live births to 4.0 per 1,000 live births. The 2013 rate represents less than
half the rate of 1980 (9.7 per 1,000 live births) and one quarter of the rate from
1970 (16.0 per 1,000 live births).
?
Between 2012 and 2013, the black neonatal death rate increased from 6.6 per
1,000 live births to 7.0 per 1,000 live births. The black neonatal death rate (7.0
per 1,000 live births) is more than twice the white rate (3.0 per 1,000 live births).
?
Florida's 2013 infant mortality rate is 6.1 per 1,000 live births. This is an
increase after setting a record low in 2012. From 2000 to 2008, the resident
infant mortality rate fluctuated between a low of 7.0 per 1,000 live births to a
high of 7.5 per 1,000 live births. Between 2009 and 2013 the rate shows a
downward trend. The 2013 resident infant mortality rate has dropped 36.5
percent since 1990 and is currently less than half the rate of 1980.
?
The resident infant mortality rate increased slightly from 6.0 per 1,000 live
births in 2012 to 6.1 per 1,000 live births in 2013. The white infant mortality rate
remained unchanged with 4.6 per 1,000 live births in 2012 and 4.6 per 1,000 live
births in 2013. The black infant mortality rate slightly decreased from 10.7 per
1,000 live births in 2012 to 10.6 per 1,000 live births in 2013.
?
In 2013, resident infant deaths among non-Hispanic and non-Haitian origin
accounted for 74.6 percent of all resident infant deaths. Among other ethnic
groups, infants of Hispanic origin represented 19.8 percent, infants of Haitian
origin represented 3.9 percent and 1.7 percent occurred to infants whose
ethnicity was unknown.
?
Among all resident infant deaths during 2013, 65.2 percent were neonatal
deaths (occurring before infants were 28 days old). Furthermore, 38.0 percent
of infant deaths occurred to infants who were less than one day old.
?
The most frequent causes of resident infant deaths in 2013 were: 1) Perinatal
Period Conditions (674 deaths), 2) Congenital Malformations (236 deaths), 3)
Unintentional Injuries (Accidents) (119 deaths), and 4) Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome (SIDS) (53 deaths). These causes accounted for 78.3 percent of all
resident infant deaths.
